BRIEF HISTORY OF IBADAN CITY

By:Lightbearer

BRIEF HISTORY OF IBADAN

Creation of Ibadan was circumstantial. The history of Ibadan had long been preserved through oral history but written record says it was formed in 1829. After the collapse of the Yoruba Empire towards the end of the 18th century, ‘Eba Odan’ had been populated by Yoruba rebels. ‘Eba Odan’ means between the forests and the plains and it was surrounded by seven hills, it functioned as a sacred area for the fighters that fled the war. Before the existence of Ibadan, Oyo, a very powerful empire, was long established and govern larger part of Yoruba land, many fierce independent warriors emerged from Oyo such as Bashorun Gaa.

Bashorun Gaa was the head of the Oyo Mesi, He was a monster in the kingdom. While on the throne as prime minister between 1750 and 1774, Bashorun Gaa was a classical tyrant ruler. He instrumental the killing of four kings or forced them to commit suicide (Faleti,1972). Alaafin Labisi 1750 after 17 days on the throne; Alaafin Awonbioju 1750 after 130 days on the throne; Alaafin Agboluaye 1750-1772 (Agboluaje submitted to Bashorun Gaa’s dictation but was later forced to commit suicide under the command of Bashorun Gaa) and also executed Alaafin Majeogbe 1772-1773. He also instructed the murder of the daughter of Alaafin Abiodun and later used the victim for money ritual. Bashorun Gaa, unconstitutionally hijacked all the political power and machinery of Oyo kingdom.

The elimination of Bashorun Gaa was a difficult task. It cost the old Oyo kingdom lots of both human and natural resources. Alaafin Abiodun and Oyo warriors in collaboration with Aare-Ona-Kaka-N-fo Oyalabi, arrested Gaa. He was tied to a stake at Akesan market and Alaafin Abiodun ordered that every citizen should cut a pound of flesh from his body and drop it in a huge fire in front of him. He was made to smell the odour of his own flesh, his nose was not allowed to be cut. The remains of his body were later burnt in fire to prevent his re-incarnation.

His embarrassing death led to the popular Yoruba saying that “Bi o ba la’ya O si’ka; bi’o ba ri’ku Gaa, O sooto” which means (if you are wicked and pigheaded when you see the death of Gaa, try to be good and speak the truth) Before 1829 Lagelu, the Jagun (commander-in-chief) of Ife and Yoruba’s generalissimo, left Ile Ife with some people from Ife, Oyo and Ijebu to found a new city, at Eba Odan, the first city was destroyed due to an incident at an Egungun (masquerade) festival when an Egungun was accidentally disrobed and mocked by women and children in an open marketplace. Meanwhile, In Yorubaland, it was an abomination for women to have eye-to-eye contact with Egungun, Egungun was considered to be the dead forefathers who returned to the earth each year to bless their descendant. When this news reached Sango, the then Alaafin of Oyo, he commanded that Eba-Odan be destroyed for committing such abominable act.

Lagelu and some of his people fled to a nearby hill for protection (sacred place). On the hill they survived by eating Oro fruit and Igbin (snails); later, they cultivated the land and made corn and millets into pap meals (eko), which they ate with roasted snails. They improvised a bit by using the snail shells (Ikarahun Igbin) to drink the liquefied eko. This eating habit formed part of the ancestral praise (Oriki) of Ibadan people today. Later, Lagelu and his people came down from the hill and founded another city called Eba’dan on the same spot.

They began to welcome more people to expand. Eba’dan became a refugee center. Various people, such as warriors, war escapee, escaped slaves, people in exile etc from various parts of other Yoruba cities. They developed more flexible laws because of the diverse nature of the people. Ibadan grew into an impressive and sprawling urban centre so much that by the end of 1829, Ibadan dominated the Yorùbá region militarily, politically and economically. Shortly, Lagelu died, leaving behind a politically oriented people and a very stable community. Around 1826/27, Afọnja of Ilorin, who was the Arẹ-Ọna-Kankan-Fo of old Ọyọ Empire, refused to carry out the order of Alaafin, when told to wage war against Iwere-Ile, a Yoruba town in Oyo.

An unresolved rivalry brewed between Alaafin and Afọnja. Afọnja formed alliance with Alimi, the head of Fulani warriors (who are settlers in Ilorin) against Ọyọ, and Oyo kingdom was destroyed. Unfortunately, Fulani supporters turned against Afonja as well and killed him on the order of Alimi. Ilọrin also lost its independence and became Fulani controlled territory. Therefore, whenever Yoruba says Ilorin is afonja’s city, Fulani will say ‘’it is Alimi’s city. This led to the present saying of ‘Ilorin afonja-Geri alimi’. In 1840, Fulani Caliphate began to raid towards Ibadan, Oyo indigenes begin to retreats towards Ibadan, a well developed Ibadan army confronted them and pushed Fulani back to Ilorin. Few people later moved back to Oyo to form new Oyo Kingdom, but a weaker one, and many decided to stay in Ibadan.

Ibadan kept growing economically and politically and become a safer zone for all Yoruba people. During this booming era of Ibadan, one of the powerful business woman was Efunsetan Aniwura, an Egba descendant (who became Iyalode of Ibadan). Efunsetan Aniwura (owner of Gold) was a wealthy business woman at Oja-Oba in Ibadan, she owns lots of landed property and hundreds of slaves. Oral evidence reveals that she had three large farms with no less than 100 slaves working on each at a time. She extended credit facilities as form of ammunition to the various Ibadan warriors (Ajagun’ta) when they were going on their military expeditions in 1872.

She had a terrible sense of loss. Her only daughter died in 1860 during childbirth. Therefore, with the stigma of not having a progeny to inherit her legacies, she blamed God for her tragedy and vent anger on her slave and the society, becoming wicked, cruel and heartless. Her slaves are usually identified in the market with signs of cane stripes all over their body. Efunsetan kicked against the military expansion of Aare Latoosa and stopped extending credit facilities to Latoosa when Latoosa set out for another war in 1874 (Osewa, 2005; Ilesanmi, 2010). After returning from battle field, Latoosa levied three charges against Efunsetan which led to plot of death against her around 1874.

In 1893 Ibadan area became a British Protectorate after a treaty signed by Fijabi, the Baale of Ibadan with the British acting Governor of Lagos, George C. Denton on 15 August. By then the population of Ibadan had grown to round 120,000 which made Ibadan the third most populated City in the whole of Africa after Cairo and Johannesburg. The British developed the new colony to facilitate Ibadan commercial activities and Ibadan shortly grew into the major trading center that it is today

Long live Ibadan…Long live Yorubaland..

SAKI EMPIRE, The Food Basket of OYO STATE.

By, Big Boss.

With OYO STATE being the centre of the Old Oyo empire, exhibiting the culture and tradition of the Oyo descendants, there are some values that have been sustained till now and are what make some parts of the state maintain their significance.

One such part of Oyo State is SAKI. Saki is a town in Oyo, and it is located about 40 miles from the Benin border, close to the source of the Ofiki River, which is the main tributary of the Ogun River. After Old Oyo, located 70 miles to the east-northeast, was destroyed by Muslim Fulani conquerors in 1835, Saki, which was formerly a part of the Oyo kingdom, became a Yoruba refugee camp. However, the Yoruba Mission at the time had built an Anglican church in the town by the early 1860s.
As a result of its agricultural operations, Saki is known as the “food basket” of Oyo State. Also, the local government authority for Saki West has its headquarters there. Saki is often referred to as the heart of Ogun and one of the ancient towns in Yorubaland.

HISTORY
According to certain historians, Ogun, the eldest son of Oduduwa, created Saki, which explains why it was formerly known as Ile Ogun. As a result of a religious crisis, which is the historical fact underlying this, Oduduwa’s father and his followers went to the Niger region of Bussau from Egypt. While travelling, Ogun learned that Saki was a small village that resembled a hunter’s camp. He left Saki and traveled to Ibarapa, Lagos, Benin, and Ife, and then returned to Saki.

Temporarily serving as the capital of the Yoruba kingdom was Saki, the governing town of Ogun. He passed away in Saki, the first village in Ogun. This is the reason why people frequently state that Ogun is an Ire stranger but a Saki native.
History has it that the name of the town was called “Sa-kiri,” which means “a fleeing refugee.” According to accounts, the escaping refugees eventually found relief on Asabari Hill in the town. As a result, a Saki native’s “oriki” (eulogy) is incomplete without the designation “Omo Asabari,” or “Son of Asabari.” Other historians who believed that Okekesi’s personal relationship with his brother Oranmiyan—the first Alaafin of Oyo—was what caused the name to change from Ile Ogun to Saki, agreed with this. According to history, Okekesi had a fight with his cousin brother Oranmiyan over a lady and left Oyo Ile shortly after it was built for Ile Ogun.

However, Okekesi had been asked to go back to Oyo Ile three times by Oranmiyan, but he refused each time. According to a quotation from Oranmiyan, “O nsa kiri ni” implies “he has always been on the run.” As a result, it was claimed that Saki originated from this phrase. After the Muslim Fulani conquerors destroyed the Old Oyo in 1835, Saki, which was formerly a part of the old Oyo Empire, became a Yoruba refugee town. According to people who are unfamiliar with its past, Saki holds a significant position among Yoruba towns.

Years later, the first Saki king, according to legend, was Akinbekun. He was Oranmiyan’s son, born to him by Egilolo, who was the daughter of Kisra, the king of Ibadan. So, because River-Ogun emerged as a result of disputes between the Okere and his wife, Modelewu, the reign of Akinbekun as king of Saki was associated with a highly significant event. It was rumoured that Akinbekun used to wear a power garment when engaged in combat.

Modelewu would pray for him once he put on the garment, and he would triumph in combat. However, there was a requirement that the clothing not be damaged by rain or touched by a woman. Akinbekun had dried his garment outside because it was a scorching day, but he wasn’t home at the time. The situation changed, and rain started to fall.

He received prompt assistance from Modelewu, who has a wonderful heart, and he quickly returned home. Modelewu, who had a large breast, detested it when it was mocked. When the king returned, he chastised and mocked her for her large breasts. She eventually left the community as a result of this, and she later became the river Ogun close to Iseyin. History states that ever since that time, it has been illegal for any Saki governing Okere to look at the river when traveling through it. The town’s traditional leader is known as the Okere of Saki.

Oba Kilani Olatoyese Ilufemiloye Olarinre, who passed away on Friday, April 5, 2013, two days before the first anniversary of his coronation, was replaced as Okere of Saki on December 18th, 2019, by Oba Khalid Olabisi Oyeniyi. An Anglican church was also built in the town by the Yoruba Mission at the beginning of the 1860s.

Today, Saki has expanded to include institutions such as Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, The Kings Poly, Muslim Hospital’s School of Basic Midwifery, Baptist Medical Center’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Saki’s School of Laboratory, among other’s.

NATURAL RESOURCES
The resources of the region, shows that the area is richer than some African countries, including Botswana which is rich in diamond and is one of the most prosperous African countries.
In solid minerals, Oke Ogun has no equal in Nigeria. In almost all sectors of agriculture, the region is beyond compare.

Marble, dolomite and others are in Igbetti, Olorunsogo Local Government and in Oriire. Tourmaline is in Komu, Itesiwaju, Tantalite in Sepeteri, Quartz in Itesiwaju, Columbite, talc and several other minerals in all parts of the region. Indeed, the economic development of Oyo State can be taken for granted on account of the mineral deposits in Oke Ogun.

TOURISM
On tourism, that same region is blessed with almost too much. There is the Ado Awaye suspended lake, Igbo Oba in Kisi, Ebedi Hill in Iseyin, Asabari Hill in Saki, Akomare Hill in Igangan and many other natural tourist attractions waiting to be developed. The Ikere Gorge Dam, which has the capacity to boost the agro-industrial development of the whole of Nigeria as well as supply power to the people has been abandoned for years.

Oke-Ogun not only has the land and mineral resources, it has a hardworking, honest people to whom integrity and humility are second nature.

ADELEKE FORGED CERTIFICATES, OYETOLA TELLS TRIBUNAL

By: Lightbearer

Adeleke forged certificates, Oyetola tells tribunalt

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State on Friday asked the Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo to nullify the election of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ademola Adeleke.
According to the governor, the election was fraught with certain irregularities.

He also said that Adeleke ought not to have been declared winner as he was not qualified to have contested the election in the first place, having submitted forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commision.

Saturday PUNCH reported that Adeleke was returned elected by the INEC, after defeating his closest challenger, Oyetola, and 13 other candidates, scoring a total of 403, 371

Oyetola got 375, 027 votes and won in 13 Local Government Areas of the state to come second in the election.

A member of Oyetola’s legal team, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), in an interview with Saturday PUNCH immediately after filing the petition in Osogbo said the governor has assembled 50 lawyers including 10 Senior Advocates of Nigeria, listing 13 grounds on which premises Adeleke should be disqualified.

Other key members of the legal team included Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Chief Akin Olujumi (SAN), Prince Biodun Layonu (SAN/, Muritala Abdulrasheed (SAN).

Adegoke said the election in many 749 polling units were fraught with irregularities.

The legal team, he said, have established by the petition that the election in those 749 polling units across 10 Local Governments in Osun State was characterized by irregularities pertaining to over voting.

Adegoke said, “We have nothing less than 50 lawyers, including 10 SANs that we cannot list all of them, so we have listed about 20 lawyers in the petition. We have 13 reliefs. What we are contesting is that the election is fraught with certain irregularities by which the person declared winner ought not to have been declared and the petitioner, Alhaji Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola ought to have been declared the winner on the ground that Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke was not qualified to have contested the election in the first place, having submitted forged certificate to INEC.

“The second is that the election in 749 polling units was fraught with irregularities and the election in those units ought to have been nullified. All the polling units mentioned are in 10 Local Governments, out of 30.

“So, if the election in those units is nullified and the votes are cancelled, then Alhaji Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola will have comfortable requirements of the constitution to be declared winner of the election.”

Asked when the trobinal would commence sitting, Adegoke said he does not know.

“We don’t know yet but now that we have filed, it is expected that once the PDP is served, their lawyers will file their own defence then we will file a reply to their defence. That is when the tribunal will be able to give a date.

“Except if either of the two parties have an application that requires urgency, only then can the Tribunal have an emergency sitting but as of now nobody knows the date”, he said.

Adegoke had on July 19 told The PUNCH that Oyetola may line up over 50 lawyers to contest the declaration of Adeleke as winner.

He had said, “We are still reviewing documents and the legal team is actually working. In an election of this nature, the documents will be so many; so it is important to look at them critically before we take a decision and that is exactly what we are working on right now.

“Dr Biodun Layonu (SAN), is the leader of the team. The legal team is not complete yet because there are so many others that will still come in.

“In the meantime, the two members of the legal team we can reveal is Dr Biodun Layonu and Kunle Adegoke. Others that may come in are people, we may not know but as soon as we are ready to move, we will notify the press.

“The membership can’t be determined as many lawyers are interested in joining the team. You know election petition is a special case. So, we allow as many lawyers that are interested to come in. We may run into 50 or more membership.”

When contacted for reaction, the Chairman, Media Management Team of Osun PDP, Prince Diran Odeyemi, said the party was not losing sleep over the petition.
According to him, many of APC leaders that were saying that the result of the election should be challenged before the tribunal, lost election in their wards, saying APC should have adopted the spirit of sportsmanship regarding the result of the poll.

“It is so unfortunately that APC did not believe in the spirit of sportsmanship. We would have expected them to congratulate Adeleke. Many of them, who are championing the cause of tribunal lost in their polling units and their wards.

“We wonder what they want to take to the Tribunal now. We are not afraid or losing sleep, Oyetola can’t win. We will meet them at the tribunal. Regarding the allegation of forged certificate, there is nothing like that. They are only looking for an avenue to come back to government through the backdoor. PDP is thorough political party that look at all the certificates presented by the candidates,” Odeyemi concluded.

THE BRAIN

By:Pen’s Worth

YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS ABOUT THE BRAIN

Can your brain get full? (Yes or No?)

What is the memory capacity of the human brain? Is there a physical limit to the amount of information you can store?

In this article we are going to answer the question ‘’Can your brain get full?’’, we will define the possible limits of human memory and how much information the brain can handle at the same time.

Can your brain get full?
No, the brain can’t get full. The brain is so specialized that it discards unnecessary information to make more room for new memories.

Many times, when we study for too long, it seems that our brain can no longer hold more information. We feel that not one more piece of information fits in our heads, and that our storage capacity has probably reached its limit.

However, our body is not like a computer, and the amount of information that the human brain can store cannot be measured in the same way.

Brain storage
Storage refers to the information retained in the brain, in one of three possible memories: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. In this way, the brain handles the information we receive, without us feeling too overloaded with it.

If we see something repeated several times, for a long time, it’s possible that it remains in our long-term memory, while other things are simply passing through our brain.

Long-term memory is not located in a specific area of the brain, it’s distributed in the cerebral cortex. After consolidating, it’s stored as a group of neurons in the same area of the brain that generated it. For example, it will be in the visual cortex if it’s a memory related to sight.

In this way, memories are rebuilt and new elements are taken from different parts of the brain, and they don’t remain static. Although at the moment we don’t remember some data, the information is still there. In addition, it’s not possible to delete information at will, something that would be useful if we suffered a traumatic event. Isn’t the brain interesting to know about?.
